Can you imagine a world without offices, a world where people don’t have to commute, where paper and plastics are not so readily consumed, where people did all their shopping from home. Well, there are studies going on to determine how that can come to be in the near future. Broadband, the Internet and Telecommunications will be a big part of a comprehensive energy policy, and may get us there sooner than you think. There is a worldwide push in the direction of expanding Broadband capabilities and other related technologies, to help countries throughout the world reach that lofty goal of lowering the greenhouse emissions before the point of no return.
Here’s a list of how the widespread use of broadband can help the environment:
- Business to Business and Business to Consumer E-Commerce: less energy use
- Telecommuting: less people driving, less construction, less energy use.
- Teleconferencing:less airline travel.
- Reduction in Mail Services: less energy use, less paper.
- Downloading of Music and Videos :Less Plastic consumption.
- Electronic Documents & E-mail: Reduction of Office Paper.
- Shifting of Newspaper & Magazine subscriptions to Online Media: reduction in paper consumption.
This list is only the beginning of the benefits that broadband can bring to the environment. We are lucky here in the U.S. that broadband is so widely available, and yet only 1 out of 2 homes have broadband. When we look into ways on how to reduce our carbon footprint, whether we are an individual, business or governmental entity, let’s not overlook the benefits that broadband can have on energy use and the environment.

Sounds like a plan and a good idea but will take a while, everyone needs to have broadband first!
Your right , it is a good plan, but people and businesses especially need to be educated on the benefits of having people work from home. It not only is beneficial to the environment, but also to families and personally.
Thanks for your comments…
Good points.
There are some remote areas where the government is subsidizing for land lines under USAC. So they probably won’t have broadband too.
I think this has potential but so far the global connectivity created by the internet has caused a huge increase in demand for air travel which has a very negative impact on the environment.
Hey Timewarp,
It’s true that it has caused a increase in travel, but given time and the expansion of Broadband throughout the world, eventually this will change. With the availability of Broadband and teleconferencing people will realize that it’s not always necessary to get on a plane and fly somewhere, when they can get it done from the office or home better yet. Let’s not forget that we are not fully up and running on Broadband here, much less the rest of the world.
Im thinking of a paperless office scenario where maybe 80% of the old way we used paper was eliminated but 500% new ways were created.
With air travel say 90% of people in the future opt for use of teleconferencing instead. Now take that extra 10% and multiply it by a 1000 or 10 000% increase in international commerce enabled by broadband, that’s still 100-1000% growth in travel.
So no matter how fast broadband spreads it will only increase demand for travel at a 10% faster rate, if not much greater.
