Stop Animal Abuse-Public Awareness
September 27th, 2007 at 09:21 pm by czecho in General, Green Knowledge, Green News, Public AwarenessToday we are joining thousands of Bloggers throughout the world, to make people aware of different types of abuse in the world.
My chosen topic is Animal Abuse, recently very much in the news with the Micheal Vick story of fighting and abusing dogs in his home in Virginia. And most recently, with the case of a rapper turned actor DMX, who is being investigated for animal cruelty to 12 Pit Bulls in Arizona and who formerly pleaded guilty to charges of 13 counts of animal cruelty in New Jersey back in 1999.
These stories help bring the subject of Animal Abuse to the limelight, but people need to be aware that this is happening all the time, all around us. The problem is nobody pays attention unless someone famous is doing it.
There are things we can do to prevent abuse:
- Get involved with Pet-Abuse.com. they keep a database of Animal Abusers, whether they have been convicted or not. They educate the public on Animal Abuse, they get people involved to prevent and put an end to Animal Abuse.
- Take care of the pets you have. Educate yourself
- Make a donation to Pet-Abuse.com
- Volunteer and Donate to a local Animal Shelter
- Get Involved with your local Government
- Be aware of the Animals around you, if you suspect anything , report it to your local shelter. They will go and investigate.
-
- Be aware of your neighborhood pets:
- Maybe there is an elderly person who could use some help taking care of their pets. You could help.
- Maybe their some kids in the neighborhood who are mistreating their pets or animals in general. You could educate.
- Maybe you know someone who would be a good pet owner, you can direct them to a local shelter instead of a breeder.
- Maybe you know a pet owner who doesn’t have their pet spayed or neutered, you can explain and convince them that there are way too many cats and dogs without homes and good pet owners already.

An Extreme Locavore Experiment: Gone Awry
September 17th, 2007 at 02:51 pm by bibi in General, Green Action, Green Knowledge, Green Living, Green News, New Green Ideas
The Locavore movement originated in San Francisco and has spread coast to coast as more and more people look for ways to cut down on the resources used to grow and transport the food we eat. Instead they choose to buy locally grown foods that also support Local Farmers. This is a great idea and if it really catches on across the country it would really cut down on the resources used by the trucks and trains to transport all the foods that we find in our supermarkets. Of course it would also limit the variety of foods available in each region of the country. Everything can not be grown everywhere. Every region has its own weather, and can only sustain certain types of fruits and vegetables. But it helps to use what Local Farmers have to offer.
Some folks, “Extreme Locavores “, go even as far as growing everything themeselves, including the animals they eat. One man in Brooklyn, New York decided that he would try being one of these people and set out to create his farm in his 800 sq ft. back yard in Brooklyn. But his attempt to eat only what he grows, turned out to be harder and more expensive that originally thought.

Global Warming: Czech President’s View: Blue Not Green Planet
September 15th, 2007 at 03:09 pm by bibi in General, Green Books, Green News, Green Poll“Freedom is at risk, not the climate”, so says Vaclav Klaus president of the Czech Republic. He feels so strong about this issue that he has written a book, refuting the Al Gore and Environmentalists claim that Global Warming can only be reversed by radical measures taken right now. According to an article written by President Klaus and published on the FinancialTimes.com, Klaus feels strongly that the Global Warming “hysteria” is getting out of hand and that “the biggest threat to freedom and democracy, the market economy and prosperity is in ambitious Environmentalism, not in communism”. He calls the environmentalist “Malthusian Pessimists”, who manipulate the data to depict a precipitous view of the world.
After an overwhelming response to his article, FT.com did an interview with Klaus, asking him the questions posed by it’s reader’s.
Question: “…How much evidence for environmental damage do you need to see before you are willing to advocate collective action in order to prevent the need for later extreme action?
Oddi Aasheim, London”
Answer: “When I study and analyse environmental indicators concerning my own country and when I compare them with the situation in the communist era, there is an incredible improvement. The improvement is not because of “collective action” you advocate (it existed in the communist era), but because of freedom and of free markets. That’s my main message.”
See the rest of the Interview with Klaus. Provocative questions and answers.
In his book he admits that, yes global warming is happening, but it’s taking it’s natural course. He believes that the human race shouldn’t spend so much time fighting it, and is more worried about the fear mongering that is put out by the environmentalist.
Food for thought: Quoting Micheal Chriton in his article,” “The greatest challenge facing mankind is the challenge of distinguishing reality from fantasy, truth from propaganda”.
Take a look at his article and the ensuing interview, then take the poll.

How Much Rain Water Are You Recycling?
September 4th, 2007 at 05:14 am by bibi in General, Green ActionFriends of mine built their dream house in Florida not too long ago. They have a couple of acres and a huge pond in front of their house. While at their house I noticed that they have an extension attached to the ends of the gutters that goes underground. Now I found that rather strange, so I asked where that water was ending up. They told me that when they were designing the house they thought about how they were going to maintain the pond water level up, so they decided that diverting the rain water to the pond would be a good way to help do that. They had an extra expense while they were setting up the system, but now can capture all the rain water that comes their way. Not a bad way to recycle rain water.
It occurred to me that there must be many re-uses for rain water. Here are a few of the easier ideas to implement. These come especially handy in those areas throughout the country where there are water restrictions due to dryer weather.
Other ways to recycle rain water is to divert the water into rain barrels and then reuse the water for you garden, cleaning or even flushing your toilets. It can also be used for drinking but would have to be filtered and that requires a cistern and several filters and a purification system, not an easy or cheap process but it can be done. For now we’ll stick to the easier ones.
For Garden Use:
If you use a rain barrel you can attach a faucet to the bottom and then attach a Soaker Hose to the faucet. Place the soaker hose around the plants you want to water and turn the faucet on, this system uses gravity to drain the water. Several rain barrels around the house should water the majority of your garden.
Read More: Build your own Rain Barrel System
For Cleaning:
The water can be used for cleaning projects around the house: Washing your car, hose down your driveway, paths and patios, clean out the gutters, it might even work with the faucet attached to the rain barrel and a power washer? (Not sure, but maybe worth a try)
For Flushing Toilets:
Another way I found out where rain water could be recycled, is to use it to flush toilets. Here’s a site that shows how to do this.

If you’ve discovered other ways to recycle rain water, please share them with us.

Interactive Environmental Site for Kids
August 21st, 2007 at 10:35 pm by bibi in General, Green Action, Green Kids, Green LivingJohn Muir left as his legacy an enduring spirit of respect for the environment.
It should be our goal to leave the same Legacy for our kids. How do we teach our kids about the environment, and how to take care of it. Obviously, first and foremost by example. But there is a site that can help explain about the environment and how we impact it in a fun way for kids. The EPA has a site for kids, that teaches them all about climate and weather, Greenhouse Effects, Global Warming, the History of Climate on Earth, our impact on the environment, and what we can do to make a difference. It’s an interactive site full of Fun Facts and Games and Quiz’s and Animations, Interactive Storybooks you can download, they even have an area for Teachers Tools.

I know, it’s hard to believe but there are still cities out there that don’t have a recycling program. I know this for sure because my brother lives in one of those cities. Every time I go to his house and see what goes into the garbage, my heart breaks. I thought that maybe we could collectively do something about this. Let’s see if we can make some noise.
If you live in a city that still does not have a recycling program. Send your city the message: “We Want Curbside Recycling”
You can easily find your City’s Website by typing the city’s name followed by .org or just Google it! Or just simply click on the icon and it will take you to a city directory.
If your city doesn’t recycle leave a comment here with the name of the city you live in, and we can all send them a message and I will list them on one the “GREEN LISTS” pages.

Consumers Question Organic Products
August 8th, 2007 at 01:50 am by mercedes in General, Green News, Green ProductsOrganic products, though normally dominated by small companies, are being brought out by larger companies. Federal standards require that all raw materials are guaranteed organic, but the same standards also leave those material to be used in wide open interpretation. Now all organic product companies have doubtful consumers who are questioning the sincerity of the products. Because of the big companies joining a smaller company industry, the question of what really is organic has arouse. Co-founder of the Cornucopia Institute, Mark Kastel, believes that the majority of organic companies follow the federal standards but worries because this industry still remains an honor system, few may be acting unhonorably. Even though this is a problem, entrepreneurs in the organic industry are dealing with an even bigger one, supply and demand. Local suppliers would be ideal for organic companies, but they seem to be nonexistent. Like Brian Chossek, president of Seven Oaks Ranch, sourcing the organic materials can be an issue, importing raw materials from other countries is their only choice when materials run low. According to Kastel, the problems will resolve one of two ways, companies who act honorably will find new ways to brand their products or consumers will boycott against companies that show themselves has unworthy.

Was Live Earth True to it’s Message
August 6th, 2007 at 04:08 am by bibi in General, Green Action, Green NewsThe message was Keep it Green. But were the Concerts True to the Message?
The Event was held at 7 Locations throughout the world. Just to put together regular Concerts is hard enough, now to make sure that they were kept Green must have been logistical nightmare. “At all seven locations, wind and solar energy was purchased from local utilities to offset the energy demand. Bio-fuel was used to power on-site generators for the shows at New Jersey’s Giants Stadium, London’s Wembley Stadium, and at Rio’s Copacabana Beach, which, with some 400,000 revelers, drew the event’s biggest audience. Energy-efficient LED’s were used for stage lighting. Plywood normally used for ground cover and tent-flooring was replaced with mats made from reusable composite materials. Carbon credits will eventually be bought to offset the air travel of event staff and performers.”
If the message got through it will all have been worth it.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the air within homes and other buildings can be more seriously polluted than the outdoor air. Research indicates that people spend approximately 90 percent of their time indoors. It’s also true that, unlike so many other forms of pollution, indoor air pollution is relatively easy to correct. Some common sources of indoor air pollution include new carpet; paint; mold and mildew build up, particularly in ventilation systems; tobacco smoke; restroom air fresheners; chemicals emitted by copying machines; and formaldehyde and other chemicals that can seep out of pressed-wood products like particleboard, plywood paneling, and fiber-board.To keep your air as fresh as possible, consider these tips:
- Circulate the air.
Wherever possible, select offices whose windows open _ and crack them open every now and then. If you install new carpeting or cabinets at home or in the office, open windows and turn on fans until the new smells dissipate. Make sure that copying machines and other equipment are located in rooms that are properly ventilated. - Consider the alternatives.
Many chemically-sensitive consumers opt for carpet made from wool or cotton rather than synthetic fibers; others choose cabinets made from solid wood and finished with water-based varnishes rather than those constructed from particleboard or fiberboard. - Keep it clean.
Rather than use synthetic air fresheners to mask an unpleasant odor, find the source of the odor, and clean it up. Then open the windows for fresh air, or use flowers or potpourri to add a more natural scent to your room. If necessary, install air filters and purifiers and other air cleaning devices. - Ask smokers to smoke outside.
It is not unreasonable to ask visitors to your home to take a smoking break out of doors. Many offices have already instituted a smoking policy that minimizes nonsmoker exposure to environmental tobacco smoke; if yours hasn’t, broach the topic with your office manager. - Speak up.
If you or others at your office are experiencing health or comfort problems that you suspect may be caused by indoor air pollution, discuss the issue with your supervisor. Talk with your own physician and report your problems to the company physician, nurse, or health officer so that they can make appropriate recommendations.

“A health study published in the August issue of Atmospheric Environment found that prolonged exposure to “electrical fields” can cause increased risk of respiratory diseases and infection…” The electrical charges generated in the average indoor environment, such as offices or Hospitals, and created by computers and excess static electricity carry higher risks for health problems than previously thought. But there are things that can be done.
