Teleconfrencing By Hologram…
January 31st, 2008 at 11:57 am by bibi in Environment, Green Action, Green Knowledge, Green News, Innovation, New Green IdeasPrince Charles made a big splash by attending the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi last week, in Greener fashion then most other attendees. He arrived by 3D Hologram.Amazing most attendees, the Prince appeared out of thin air, just like in the movies. The whole 6 minute clip was previously video taped in the United Kingdom. Part of the reason that the Prince decided to show up in his “Green Suit” was a response to British press criticism of his trip to the US last year to pick up an environmental award. By not appearing in person he avoided adding 20 tons of Carbon Dioxide into the atmosphere.
Musion Systems is the British company that provided this new technology, The Musion® Eyeliner™ is a high definition holographic video projection system allowing spectacular 3-dimensional moving images to appear within a live stage setting using Pepper’s Ghost technology. Eyeliner™ brings dramatic, previously unseen 21st century video film effects to live events, including audiovisual artistic performances, conference or trade show presentations, retail displays and large-scale digital signage.Unfortunately the technology is not at the point where it can deliver “Live Telepresence”, due to data flow constraints. But it’s coming…Until the technology catches up with Star trek, in the mean time we can take advantage of Broadband and use technologies like Skype and others like it to communicate with business partners and colleagues, without having to get in our cars or Jets.

Bring A Gas Mask To The Beijing Olympics
January 28th, 2008 at 09:37 am by bibi in Environment, Go Green, Green News, OlympicsIf your considering going to the Beijing Summer Olympics starting 08/24/08, you may want to invest in a gas mask. Air quality concerns are still a high priority for Beijing’s Summer Olympics. According to CNN, the Mayor of Beijing was quoted last Sunday as saying that “Beijing will use the strictest standards to control emissions and curb pollution for the Summer Olympics but it will be an uphill task”.
In order to address the Olympics Air Quality concerns, Beijing will have to deal with gridlock and rampant pollution throughout the city. Part of the plan is to shut down blast furnaces in the city’s biggest steel company, convert some coal burning factories to gas, and some factories have been relocated outside the city. Already 78 miles of trees have been planted in a ring around the city, to hopefully take up some of the pollution, and 1/3 of Beijing’s 3.3 million cars will be banned from the city during the Olympics.
It is a tall order, but Beijing is committed to being ready by August.
The President of the International Olympic Committee, Jaques Rogge, said in an interview with CNN in 2007, that the Olympic Committee will put the health of the athletes first. If the Air Quality is poor for a particular event, that event would be postponed or canceled.

The Greenest City On Earth…
January 22nd, 2008 at 10:49 am by bibi in Environment, Green Building, Green Knowledge, Green Living, Green News, Innovation, Recycle, SolarOn Monday January 21st, the World Future Energy Summit was be held in Abu Dhabi, at which time the plan for Masdar City, the greenest city on earth was unveiled.
Masdar City will be the first carbon-neutral, waste-free, car-free city.
The city will consist of six-square kilometers (2.3 sq miles), that will eventually house about 50,000 residents and 1500 businesses. They will start construction in the first quarter of 2008, and will take approximately 10 years to complete, although it’s firsts residents will be able to move in by 2009.
No Pollution, No Waste… Now how will they accomplish this you ask? Here’s a list:
- ZERO CARBON: 100 per cent of energy supplied by renewable energy – Photovoltaics, concentrated solar power, wind, waste to energy and other technologies
- ZERO WASTE: 99 per cent diversion of waste from landfill (includes waste reduction measures, re-use of waste wherever possible, recycling, composting, waste to energy)
- SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT: Zero carbon emissions from transport within the city; implementation of measures to reduce the carbon cost of journeys to the city boundaries (through facilitating and encouraging the use of public transport, vehicle sharing, supporting low emissions vehicle initiatives)
- SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS: Specifying high recycled materials content within building products; tracking and encouraging the reduction of embodied energy within materials and throughout the construction process; specifying the use of sustainable materials such as Forest Stewardship Council certified timber, bamboo and other products
- SUSTAINABLE FOOD: Retail outlets to meet targets for supplying organic food and sustainable and or fair trade products
- SUSTAINABLE WATER: Per capita water consumption to be at least 50 per cent less than the national average; all waste water to be re-used
- HABITATS AND WILDLIFE: All valuable species to be conserved or relocated with positive mitigation targets
- CULTURE AND HERITAGE: Architecture to integrate local values.
- EQUITY AND FAIR TRADE: Fair wages and working conditions for all workers (including construction) as defined by international labour standards
- HEALTH AND HAPPINESS: Facilities and events for every demographic group

The Grim Reaper Reports on Global Warming
November 17th, 2007 at 09:57 pm by bibi in Environment, Go Green, Green Action, Green News, Public Awareness
The UN has come out with it’s 4th and final report on Global Warming, released today at a session of the IPCC (UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) . The 20 page summary report projects a grim picture of the world due to the effects of climate change . But, also insist that if the governments of the world take notice and do what is recommended in the report than we can avoid catastrophe. The report favors mandatory reductions of greenhouse gases, and will be used as a blueprint for negotiations in Bali, Indonesia, in talks that will be held next month to discuss what agreements will follow the expiration of the Kyoto Protocol. The Kyoto Protocol is an agreement by 36 nations to lower greenhouse emissions by 2012. The United States, Australia, China and other developing Nations are not participants to this agreement.
The report, put together by the thousands scientists that make up the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, basically are telling us that if we don’t do anything to combat the imminent temperature change than it will be our demise. The world will succumb to droughts, rising sea-levels, flooding of coastlines, melting of the ice caps, and other catastrophic events.
There are the believers and the un-believers in Global Warming. “Global Warming” has become a charged phrase that evokes emotional responses from both sides. Whether or not the science backs up Global Warming and the claims of the believers, let’s just agree that our “Polluting” of the earth is catching up with us and we need to stop. Keep it simple and un-politicized.
Achim Steiner, head of the United Nations Environment Program.“What we need is a new ethic in which every person — changes lifestyle, attitude and behavior.”

The Devastation of Oil Spills: And the Fragility of Our Environment
November 13th, 2007 at 12:45 pm by bibi in Environment, Green News, Public Awareness
The devastating oil spill in the San Francisco Bay this past week, makes you realize how fragile our environment is. Human error to blame.
Some 58,000 gallons of oil spilled out of that tanker that hit the base of the San Francisco Bay Bridge. But so far in almost a week, only 20,000 have been recovered, it is a tedious and laborious task performed by some 900 people including some 400 volunteers, and 60 boats.A task that will never be totally completed . Some has sunk to the bottom of the Bay and dissipated into the ocean, will not be recovered and will continue to harm the wildlife and the environment long after everyone is gone from the crime scene.
And it is a crime scene, if you have ever been to San Francisco and peered out from the Golden Gate Bridge to look at the Bay, you would think you died and gone to heaven. To look at the recent pictures of the Bay now with all that oil drifting about, you know a crime has been committed; a crime to the environment. The spill is reported now to have spread from inside the Bay around the city of Berkeley to outside the Bay and up the Pacific Shore to Point Reyes, and out to the Farallon Islands.
Countless Beaches have been closed and the repercussions to the wild life is immeasurable. So far 900 oil covered birds have been recovered, 400 of them dead. Not to mention the sea life that has been affected and will continue to be affected as more oil sinks to the bottom. This is bad news for the fish and the fishermen, the crabbers in the area have asked Governor Schwarzenegger to extend the Crabbing season, which was supposed to start on Nov 15. The oil spill would affect their equipment and their catch and would not be safe to eat. It will take years for the Bay to get back to normal.
As if the San Francisco Bay spill was not enough on Sunday, a Russian Tanker got torn apart by a heavy storm, killing three sailors and spilling 1.3 million gallons of oil into the Black Sea. Thousands of oil covered birds have been found and the loss of sea life is impossible to count.
With all the technology and know how that we have, it makes you wonder why more is not done to prevent these ecological disasters. Human error again.

Fires: Global Warming or Poor Forest Management?
October 26th, 2007 at 04:11 am by bibi in Environment, Green Knowledge, Green News, Public AwarenessIn the wake of the recent California fires, it makes you wonder what if anything can be done to prevent such horrific disasters. In a 60 Minute report on Forest Fires, some experts are of the thought that the “Mega Fires” that we are experiencing in California and throughout the West are the result of Global warming. Higher temperatures causing Spring to start earlier, snows are melting up high in the mountains and running off, leaving the vegetation more time to dry out, and thus a longer time period for fires to start. Or so says Svetman, a leading fire ecologist from the University of Arizona. Based on his study of tree rings that go back 9000 years, he can tell that recent decades have been the hottest in 1000 years.
Tom Boatner who is chief fire operations for the federal government, agrees. With 30 years of fighting fires under his belt, he points out that fires of the size and intensity of fires such as today’s Mega Fires that burn half a million acres, were very rare 15-20 years ago. When asked about the un-believers in Global Warming, Boatner says” You won’t find them on the fire line in the American West anymore, ‘Cause we’ve had climate change beat into us over the last ten or fifteen years. We know what we’re seeing, and we’re dealing with a period of climate, in terms of temperature and humidity and drought that’s different than anything people have seen in our lifetimes.”
But, he also admits that part of the problem is the old Forest Service Policy started 100 years ago, and that was “to put out all fires immediately.” Now that sounds like a strange thing to say, coming from a Firemen, but he explains that “we so successfully fought fires and eliminated fire from this ecosystem for a hundred years, because we thought that was the right thing to do, we’ve allowed a huge buildup of fuel in these woods. So now, when the fires get going, there’s a lot more to burn than historically you would’ve seen in a forest like this”
And then there are others like Steve Milloy of FoxNews.com who reportedly believes that “There’s no evidence that man-made climate change is playing any role whatsoever in the current Western forest fire season. Poor timber management practices and drought conditions are the primary causes. Current drought conditions are within the range of natural variation. We need to determine what the best forest management practices are for different weather conditions rather than trying to manage the weather to suit poor forest management practices.”
My feeling is, whether one or the other turns out to be right, does it really matter? Or does fixing the problem matter? If we need to change environmental laws, then let’s change them, if Forest Service Policies need to be changed then let’s change them. If we don’t do anything, isn’t the smoke from the forest fires the ultimate contributor to global warming. Four years ago the same debate was going on in California, what has changed?
Steven J. Milloy is the founder and publisher of DemandDebate.com, JunkScience.com and CSRwatch.com; an investment adviser to the Free Enterprise Action Fund; and a columnist for FoxNews.com.

When the Lights Go Down In The City…
October 22nd, 2007 at 04:53 am by bibi in Environment, Go Green, Green Action, Green News, Public AwarenessI’m sure some of you remember that famous song by Journey talking about San Francisco. Well the lights went out last night in San Francisco and LA, all in the name of conservation.
Inspired by a similar event staged in Sydney earlier this year, Nate Tyler the event’s organizer, asked residents of San Francisco and Los Angeles to turn off their lights between 8pm and 9pm, and to install one low-watt fluorescent bulb in their homes. Organizers handed out the bulbs donated by PG&E prior to the event.
He also convinced the city’s Business and Political leaders including Mayor Gavin Newsom and the chamber of commerce to go along with the Lights Out Campaign. With that commitment the light went out at the Bay Bridge, the Golden Gate Bridge, Coit Tower, The Ferry Building and other city landmarks. Participating restaurants held service by candlelight.
Next on the agenda for the organizers is to go National. The event they are planning is called “Lights Out America” and is scheduled for March 29, 2008. Eleven cities have so far signed up including New York, Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Seattle and Los Angeles.
Let’s all get our cities involved.

Global Warming Wins The Nobel Peace Prize
October 12th, 2007 at 06:06 pm by bibi in Green Action, Green Knowledge, Green Living, Green News, Public AwarenessAl Gore and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) were awarded the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to make the public aware of the causes of man made global warming.
Both Al Gore and the United Nations Climate Panel will share the prestigious prize for 2007.
The chairman of the IPCC, R.K. Pachauri’s, initial reaction was “I would like to pay tribute to the scientific community, who are the winners of this award. The experts and scientists are the backbone of the IPCC and they provide the knowledge, which has contributed to the success of the IPCC.
I would also like to thank the governments of the world who support and facilitate the
work of the Panel. I hope, as the Chairman of the organization, I am articulating the
sentiments of the entire scientific community in acknowledging the enormous
appreciation implied in the award of the Nobel Peace Prize and this would energize all
the scientists and experts involved in the IPCC to do even more in the future.”
Al Gores reaction, was “I am deeply honored to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. This award is even more meaningful because I have the honor of sharing it with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change…” Read More: Al Gore.com

Stop Animal Abuse-Public Awareness
September 27th, 2007 at 09:21 pm by czecho in General, Green Knowledge, Green News, Public AwarenessToday we are joining thousands of Bloggers throughout the world, to make people aware of different types of abuse in the world.
My chosen topic is Animal Abuse, recently very much in the news with the Micheal Vick story of fighting and abusing dogs in his home in Virginia. And most recently, with the case of a rapper turned actor DMX, who is being investigated for animal cruelty to 12 Pit Bulls in Arizona and who formerly pleaded guilty to charges of 13 counts of animal cruelty in New Jersey back in 1999.
These stories help bring the subject of Animal Abuse to the limelight, but people need to be aware that this is happening all the time, all around us. The problem is nobody pays attention unless someone famous is doing it.
There are things we can do to prevent abuse:
- Get involved with Pet-Abuse.com. they keep a database of Animal Abusers, whether they have been convicted or not. They educate the public on Animal Abuse, they get people involved to prevent and put an end to Animal Abuse.
- Take care of the pets you have. Educate yourself
- Make a donation to Pet-Abuse.com
- Volunteer and Donate to a local Animal Shelter
- Get Involved with your local Government
- Be aware of the Animals around you, if you suspect anything , report it to your local shelter. They will go and investigate.
-
- Be aware of your neighborhood pets:
- Maybe there is an elderly person who could use some help taking care of their pets. You could help.
- Maybe their some kids in the neighborhood who are mistreating their pets or animals in general. You could educate.
- Maybe you know someone who would be a good pet owner, you can direct them to a local shelter instead of a breeder.
- Maybe you know a pet owner who doesn’t have their pet spayed or neutered, you can explain and convince them that there are way too many cats and dogs without homes and good pet owners already.

Pulling the Plug on Spring-Cleaning E-Waste
September 21st, 2007 at 11:20 pm by bibi in Green Action, Green Knowledge, Green Living, Green NewsEarth Saving Tips from
PULLING THE PLUG ON SPRING-CLEANING “E-WASTE”
If your spring cleaning turns up unwanted computers, TVs, or other electronic equipment, you’re not alone. Consumer electronics are a fast-growing portion of America’s trash. More than 3.2 million tons of electronic waste is laid to rest in landfills each year. And 250 million more computers will become obsolete between now and 2005 — not to mention countless other electronic goods.
When thrown into a landfill, computers, printers, cell phones, fax machines— even portable CD players and electric toothbrushes — can leak lead, cadmium, arsenic, mercury, selenium, chromium, and many other toxic materials into drinking water, where it can threaten our families’ health.
There are many resources to help you keep “e-waste” from harming ourselves and the environment:
Reusing electronic equipment is the best use. If you can’t reuse the equipment yourself
— for example, turning an old personal computer into a server for a household network — try donating it to a school, social service organization, or other nonprofit organization in your community. (Be aware that many groups don’t accept older or nonworking equipment.)
Recycling keeps e-waste from landfills. Most communities have recycling services available, including both for-profit and nonprofit organizations. Seek a recycler carefully. The best ones dismantle equipment, saving reusable parts before turning the remainder of the equipment into recyclable scrap. Avoid “recyclers” that ship e-waste overseas (usually to Asian countries) where it often is burned, polluting poor communities with toxic smoke.
Here are some things you can do to help reduce e-waste:
Stop thinking of used electronics as “junk.” Just because you have outgrown something, it isn’t worthless. Even if it is no longer satisfactory for you, your computer may be of use to others.
Keep e-waste out of landfills. If you cannot find ways to donate equipment, locate recycling resources in your community. Check the phone book, the Internet, and local government agencies.
Don’t do it yourself. Don’t crack open electronic equipment on your own. In addition to the hazardous materials they contain, some equipment carries an electrical charge long after being unplugged. You could get a dangerous or deadly shock!
Encourage electronics manufacturers to adopt take-back programs.
The best way to minimize e-waste is to make it easy for consumers to send equipment back to the factory for recycling. Call or write manufacturers asking them to do this.

An Extreme Locavore Experiment: Gone Awry
September 17th, 2007 at 02:51 pm by bibi in General, Green Action, Green Knowledge, Green Living, Green News, New Green Ideas
The Locavore movement originated in San Francisco and has spread coast to coast as more and more people look for ways to cut down on the resources used to grow and transport the food we eat. Instead they choose to buy locally grown foods that also support Local Farmers. This is a great idea and if it really catches on across the country it would really cut down on the resources used by the trucks and trains to transport all the foods that we find in our supermarkets. Of course it would also limit the variety of foods available in each region of the country. Everything can not be grown everywhere. Every region has its own weather, and can only sustain certain types of fruits and vegetables. But it helps to use what Local Farmers have to offer.
Some folks, “Extreme Locavores “, go even as far as growing everything themeselves, including the animals they eat. One man in Brooklyn, New York decided that he would try being one of these people and set out to create his farm in his 800 sq ft. back yard in Brooklyn. But his attempt to eat only what he grows, turned out to be harder and more expensive that originally thought.

Global Warming: Czech President’s View: Blue Not Green Planet
September 15th, 2007 at 03:09 pm by bibi in General, Green Books, Green News, Green Poll“Freedom is at risk, not the climate”, so says Vaclav Klaus president of the Czech Republic. He feels so strong about this issue that he has written a book, refuting the Al Gore and Environmentalists claim that Global Warming can only be reversed by radical measures taken right now. According to an article written by President Klaus and published on the FinancialTimes.com, Klaus feels strongly that the Global Warming “hysteria” is getting out of hand and that “the biggest threat to freedom and democracy, the market economy and prosperity is in ambitious Environmentalism, not in communism”. He calls the environmentalist “Malthusian Pessimists”, who manipulate the data to depict a precipitous view of the world.
After an overwhelming response to his article, FT.com did an interview with Klaus, asking him the questions posed by it’s reader’s.
Question: “…How much evidence for environmental damage do you need to see before you are willing to advocate collective action in order to prevent the need for later extreme action?
Oddi Aasheim, London”
Answer: “When I study and analyse environmental indicators concerning my own country and when I compare them with the situation in the communist era, there is an incredible improvement. The improvement is not because of “collective action” you advocate (it existed in the communist era), but because of freedom and of free markets. That’s my main message.”
See the rest of the Interview with Klaus. Provocative questions and answers.
In his book he admits that, yes global warming is happening, but it’s taking it’s natural course. He believes that the human race shouldn’t spend so much time fighting it, and is more worried about the fear mongering that is put out by the environmentalist.
Food for thought: Quoting Micheal Chriton in his article,” “The greatest challenge facing mankind is the challenge of distinguishing reality from fantasy, truth from propaganda”.
Take a look at his article and the ensuing interview, then take the poll.

I know, it’s hard to believe but there are still cities out there that don’t have a recycling program. I know this for sure because my brother lives in one of those cities. Every time I go to his house and see what goes into the garbage, my heart breaks. I thought that maybe we could collectively do something about this. Let’s see if we can make some noise.
If you live in a city that still does not have a recycling program. Send your city the message: “We Want Curbside Recycling”
You can easily find your City’s Website by typing the city’s name followed by .org or just Google it! Or just simply click on the icon and it will take you to a city directory.
If your city doesn’t recycle leave a comment here with the name of the city you live in, and we can all send them a message and I will list them on one the “GREEN LISTS” pages.

Consumers Question Organic Products
August 8th, 2007 at 01:50 am by mercedes in General, Green News, Green ProductsOrganic products, though normally dominated by small companies, are being brought out by larger companies. Federal standards require that all raw materials are guaranteed organic, but the same standards also leave those material to be used in wide open interpretation. Now all organic product companies have doubtful consumers who are questioning the sincerity of the products. Because of the big companies joining a smaller company industry, the question of what really is organic has arouse. Co-founder of the Cornucopia Institute, Mark Kastel, believes that the majority of organic companies follow the federal standards but worries because this industry still remains an honor system, few may be acting unhonorably. Even though this is a problem, entrepreneurs in the organic industry are dealing with an even bigger one, supply and demand. Local suppliers would be ideal for organic companies, but they seem to be nonexistent. Like Brian Chossek, president of Seven Oaks Ranch, sourcing the organic materials can be an issue, importing raw materials from other countries is their only choice when materials run low. According to Kastel, the problems will resolve one of two ways, companies who act honorably will find new ways to brand their products or consumers will boycott against companies that show themselves has unworthy.

Was Live Earth True to it’s Message
August 6th, 2007 at 04:08 am by bibi in General, Green Action, Green NewsThe message was Keep it Green. But were the Concerts True to the Message?
The Event was held at 7 Locations throughout the world. Just to put together regular Concerts is hard enough, now to make sure that they were kept Green must have been logistical nightmare. “At all seven locations, wind and solar energy was purchased from local utilities to offset the energy demand. Bio-fuel was used to power on-site generators for the shows at New Jersey’s Giants Stadium, London’s Wembley Stadium, and at Rio’s Copacabana Beach, which, with some 400,000 revelers, drew the event’s biggest audience. Energy-efficient LED’s were used for stage lighting. Plywood normally used for ground cover and tent-flooring was replaced with mats made from reusable composite materials. Carbon credits will eventually be bought to offset the air travel of event staff and performers.”
If the message got through it will all have been worth it.

Study finds Electrical Fields in Offices and Hospitals cause Health Problems
