Yep you heard right, the “Doomsday Vault” as it is referred to because it is a place where millions of seeds from over 100 countries will be kept in case of a doomsday scenario. If in a disaster, a collection of seeds is destroyed in its natural habitat, then there would remain a alternate source. Not a bad idea, considering the history of humanity.
The chosen place for this earth saving vault is called the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, located in an Arctic mountain near the town of Longyearbyen , on the Island of Stpitzberger, in Norway. It consist of 3 chambers, that have been dug 400 feet deep into the permafrost . The seeds will be kept at a temperature of minus -0.4F degrees or minus -18C degrees. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr…
The project’s intent is to preserve the earths crop diversity in case of a natural or man-made disaster. There will be thousands of varieties of seeds from over 100 countries deposited in the vault, including some that are not currently being commercially used but that may be of use when and if earth conditions change. Even in the event of drastic Global Warming and Arctic ice melt, it is believed that the facility can keep the seeds safely frozen for at least 200 years. The belief is that some of these seeds will be able to live and grow for thousands of years.

This appears to be seed savers exchange on steroids. Great idea! I wish i could have had a part in it. what a worthwhile cause. We need to collect even more seeds and save them also. the high level of world wide stupidity makes this an even more pressing issue. I sure wish I could have had a part in this endevour.
Ironic this thing opens on my Birthday as well as Ralph Nader’s and also Chelsea Clinton’s I learned today as well..
There are those who believe this was built for a cataclysm that those in the know are aware is coming so as to service their survival after a drastic reduction in world population of which they are not at all adverse too..
Personally I think it is pretty cool even though seeds aren’t particularly exciting. Did they add extra space for some world leaders in there? hehe. It is nice to see money invested into our society and preservation of our way of life.
This is definitely a worthwhile effort, hopefully we won’t ever have to use it. Unfortunately you all are right, with the way our supposed world leaders are acting we may have to eventually…
World Leaders will be saved, right next to Walt Disney…Hehe:)
Thanks for your comments guys.
I hope they plan to build another, duplicate vault sometime in the near future…maybe in Antarctica? Just in case something happens to this one! A “backup-backup” so to speak…do you think they already do the same with animal DNA? Would need a lot smaller facility I would imagine…Just in case a species of animal also gets wiped out, we could rekindle the species through cloning?
Could be useful!
thats a good idea we need more long term plans…the only thing i worry about is if it is global warming or a climate shift. perma frost has been known to melt in the past so hopefully the place they picked will be that cold in 200+ years…nobody knows what that area of the earth is going to be like in 200, 300, 500 years…
although…who’s to say at the rate were going humanity is even going to last 500 more years…
but like i said its always good to be prepared and have long term plans …better safe than sorry …
Hmm…A very cool and interesting fact here, but to collect over 100 countries seeds is not an easy task here…
This is already a backup as it’s not the only place to hold the seeds. They have been sent from collections throughout the world eg the Institute of Tropical Agriculture.
But it’s not suitable for plants which don’t have viable seeds, most importantly bananas which are one of the world’s most important crops. The main collection is stored in Leuven in belgium, with a backup in Montpellier in the south of France.
Disaasters do happen: a typhoon damaged the Philippine rice gene bank, and looters destroyed wheat and lentil gene banks at Abu Ghraib in Iraq.
A,
Thanks for all that additional info, and for stopping by.
This is the second blog I have seen mention this vault, but yours has a lot more detail than the other. I find it very fascinating and think that it is a good idea. My question is though, what if this one gets destroyed? There aren’t any others.
Hi Kevin,
Read the comment from A above and you’ll find that it it not the only vault.
Thanks for stopping by…
are they going to have majiauna seeds also? I hope so
what if all links to this storage also succumb to Doomsday disaster.Once there lived humans!!
